A traditional Costa Rican tea made with black tea, cinnamon, and unrefined cane sugar (panela or tapa de dulce). A cozy and comforting drink with rich, earthy sweetness.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 1 cup 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 block or 2 tablespoons tapa de dulce (or substitute dark brown sugar)

1 cinnamon stick

1 black tea bag (or 1 teaspoon loose-leaf black tea)

1 cup hot water

Optional: 1 slice lemon or splash of milk

Instructions

1. In a saucepan, heat 1 cup of water with the cinnamon stick and tapa de dulce.

2. Stir gently until the sugar is fully dissolved and the liquid is fragrant.

3. Add the black tea bag and steep for 5 minutes.

4. Remove tea bag, stir again, and serve hot.

5. Optionally add lemon or milk to adjust flavor.

Notes

Traditionally served in the morning or as an afternoon treat in Costa Rica.

You can adjust the sweetness by using less tapa de dulce or replacing with panela granules.
